The Coming of the iPad

Seems like we need some suitably portentous background music here…

Maybe Larry Fast’s (aka Synergy) Jupiter Menace Soundtrack?  I have it on LP, but haven’t digitized it, yet, so maybe not…
Basically, it was the Berlin Space Music version of Gustav Holst’s Planets…

Anyway, the iPad is almost here for the masses… WiFi models only, no GPS, subject to availability, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera…

One more device to confuse the thumb typing auto correction “feature” on my iPhone with an uncapitalized initial letter…

The chosen few pundits that actually already have one in their hands seem pretty impressed, with various caveats…

Here’s a prescient post about the iPad, before anyone outside of Apple even knew it’s name.  Spot on, I’d say.

Also, Cringely has a snarky (but probably accurate) post about iPad apps not actually running properly on the iPad, because the developers didn’t have actual hardware in their hands to test their apps while developing them.

A reminder that Alfred Korzybski’s assertion that “the map is not the territory” is as true as it ever was… Or maybe George Box’s “all models are wrong, but some are useful”.  A list of even more quotations about the relationships between modeling and reality can be found here.

And TUAW has a summary of Letterman’s iPad Top Ten list, and Stephen Colbert’s riff.  Best quote from Stephen:

“If you’ve already got an iPhone, a lot will be familiar to you on the iPad. The same touchscreen technology, the same apps… and just like the iPhone, you can’t make calls with it.”

I’m still pretty happy piddling along with my pocket sized iPhone, so I guess I’ll be waiting for the second or third generation before jumping in the pool… But I’m pretty sure Little Bit will end up with one, or something an awful lot like it, in her future…
